Key Vote Alert: SB 205 Will Increase Access to Middle-Class Housing

The NC Chamber supports the proposed committee substitute to Senate Bill 205 calendared to be heard in the House committee on Regulatory Reform tomorrow. This important middle-class housing bill will be scored as a key vote.

Provisions in the bill represent a serious, good-faith compromise to address the shortage of accessible, affordable housing.

This proposal has been significantly refined from earlier legislative proposals based on extensive feedback from lawmakers, the League of Municipalities, the Association of County Commissioners, and other stakeholders. It now reflects a balanced approach that promotes housing affordability while preserving local authority within the bounds set by the General Assembly.

The revised version of Senate Bill 205 is supported by the NC Chamber, NC REALTORS®, and the North Carolina Home Builders Association.

Middle-class housing is essential to supporting our communities, strengthening infrastructure, and creating an environment where both workers and businesses can thrive. The policies in the revised Senate Bill 205 are a critical step forward in realizing economic opportunity across North Carolina.

We respectfully urge members of the General Assembly to support this legislation as a critical investment in our state’s future.
