Sam Gunnels, in his role of communications manager, crafts effective messaging conveying the NC Chamber’s mission and vision while telling the stories of the positive impact of the work of member companies. Focusing on infrastructure, legal climate, tax policy, and our political program, he understands the real impact of the NC Chamber’s work for member companies and citizens of our state.
Sam earned his bachelor’s degree in journalism from Appalachian State University. He spent several years pursuing freelance and personal writing projects and has held a variety of roles within the NC Chamber. His experience working in multiple departments has provided a big-picture grasp of the organization’s mission, serving him well in his current role of communicating the many different aspects of the NC Chamber’s efforts.
He is proud to be a part of an organization that invests in its people and fosters collaboration and appreciates the opportunity to learn something new each day from his smart, curious, and diverse colleagues. In addition, he enjoys the ability to serve as a resource to support positive outcomes for our members and the state as a whole.
When he’s not at his desk, Sam can be found spending time with his family and friends, watching his nephews explore and grow, reading Hemingway or Gary Jennings, hiking, listening to Jason Isbell or Sturgill Simpson, and experimenting with his camera. He has also recently taken up Chess and hopes to improve upon his skill to be able to win a match one day. He is a lifelong Duke basketball fan and also cheers on App State football. With a special place in his heart for mountains, North Carolina High Country continues to be a favored exploration destination, and he plans to explore more of the world’s mountains someday soon.
