Navigating Tariffs in North Carolina

Few things were better telegraphed than President Trump imposing tariffs on imports. While the timing and economic impact will continue to be debated, the NC Chamber urges the federal government to think comprehensively when it comes to economic policy.

Gary J. Salamido, president and CEO, issued the following statement.

Like the rest of the country, our membership includes varying perspectives on tariffs. One thing is certain though, people are the priority for employers, and we unequivocally support removing the scourge of fentanyl that is killing North Carolinians in communities across our state.

What must be better defined at the national level are the metrics and outcomes that determine success so employers and employees can do what they do best – innovate. While tariffs will be disruptive, which even President Trump acknowledged, they are not the only tool. We must extend federal tax cuts, advance regulatory reforms, and fast track advanced nuclear energy policies that maintain and create jobs to continue to build healthy, strong communities. North Carolina employers and their people stand ready to be part of a solution.
