New Foundation Research Series to Examine North Carolina’s Infrastructure Competitiveness

| Infrastructure

North Carolina’s economic competitiveness depends on a complex network of transportation, logistics, and infrastructure assets that move goods, connect markets, and support business growth across every region of the state. As supply chains evolve and demand for efficient freight movement increases, understanding how these systems function together is increasingly important for long-term economic planning.

To better understand and strengthen these systems, the NC Chamber Foundation is releasing a research series examining North Carolina’s long-term infrastructure competitiveness focused on the state’s supply chain and logistics assets. The series will assess how the state’s transportation and logistics assets function together as an interconnected system, and where strategic investment could strengthen economic performance. The series will also examine how infrastructure components work together to support industry needs, improve market access, and enhance the state’s overall competitiveness.

The first installment in the series focuses on the Wallace-to-Castle Hayne rail corridor in southeastern North Carolina. The analysis highlights the corridor’s potential to strengthen agricultural supply chains, improve connectivity to the Port of Wilmington, support rural economic development, expand future transportation options, and enhance critical logistics infrastructure that underpins regional and statewide commerce.
