This morning, the N.C. House Finance Committee passed H786: RECLAIM NC ACT. The North Carolina Chamber applauds this legislation and is encouraged by its comprehensive approach to immigration reform in North Carolina. Lew Ebert, NC Chamber president and CEO, testified at the committee meeting in support of this legislation. H768 will now be considered by the full House.
House Bill 786 would take important steps to:
- Increase penalties for false identification documents
- Limit types of identification acceptable in determining a person’s identity or residency
- Make improvements to current E-Verify statues for seasonal workers
- Provide for the issuance of a restricted drivers permit or identification card to persons not lawfully in the U.S.
The North Carolina Chamber supports the efforts of Representative Harry Warren (R-Rowan) and N.C. House leadership to promote legislation that would enact statewide, middle-of-the-road immigration reform that would ensure a readily available workforce, while addressing immigration legality issues.
The North Carolina Chamber will keep you updated, as we continue working to advance comprehensive immigration reform.
