Retaining and Attracting North Carolina’s Best and Brightest Teachers

All of us – parents, citizens and employers – want what is best for our children. We want them to have a world-class education, to learn from our state’s best and brightest educators and to be prepared for a rewarding career. In this Chamber Minute video, Lew Ebert shares why business is “all in” when it comes to preparing our students to be equipped with real-world learning, problem-solving abilities and a genuine understanding of the skills needed to succeed in today’s workplace.

Our teachers have an integral role in preparing our students for the jobs of tomorrow and we can’t afford to lose them to other states. Last Friday, the NC Chamber ran an ad in the News & Observer to outline the broad-based business community’s recognition that teaching must be an attractive career path for young people in North Carolina. In order to do this, we must raise salaries for entry-level teachers to the national average. Also, there should be an incentive for today’s students to aspire to teach STEM subjects and there must be a mechanism to evaluate performance and reward our best teachers.
