Preparing for a Safe Return to Work:

Mindy Schestag, director of operations at Manpower North America, started off by highlighting a few of the macro trends she has seen develop across industries. As the initial reality of the pandemic set in, Mindy explained, many businesses had to make significant changes to their workforce at lightning speed, and new roles – like temperature checkers and safety officers – emerged even as others fell by the wayside. She then discussed how a new future of work is now setting in; one where employers are rethinking their workplaces and talent pipelines and focusing on flexibility rather than rigid approaches to business as usual.

As Mindy shifted the discussion to return-to-work strategies, her focus was squarely on safety. She explained that just because most businesses had to quickly hit pause on their normal work patterns when the pandemic started, that doesn’t mean they have to rush back just as quickly. Rather, she said, employers should consider “walking back” to work at a speed that fits their needs and keeps their employees safe. Moreover, with flexibility key to the future of work, Mindy encourages companies to think holistically and assess how remote work and other flexible approaches can enhance, rather than impede, their business models.
