ESSA Public Hearing Session Talks Accountability

In our previous communications, we have encouraged members to attend a public hearing on the Every Student Succeeds Act hosted by the NC Department of Public Instruction (DPI). It is important for the business community to have a strong voice in North Carolina’s development of a state education plan. Critical to the state plan is a school accountability model that fosters career and college readiness.

Through ESSA, Congress mandated that all states develop a school accountability model with multiple academic and at least one non-academic indicator. Career and college readiness measures can include credentials received; diploma endorsements of career or college preparedness; and remediation courses taken by our students in post-secondary education.

Last week, at the public hearing session at Green Hope High School, we were pleased the Q&A portion of the hearing surrounded the state’s accountability model and interest in non-academic indicators. Parents, teachers, principals, and many education associations were also represented in the discussion.

We still encourage you to attend a hearing near you and represent the business community in this important discussion. If your schedule does not allow, DPI will also be receiving public comment on their Let’s Talk online forum.
